Motorola Droid Turbo Starts Receiving Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow : TECH : Tech Times

The Motorola Droid Turbo has finally started receiving a software update that brings over Google's Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system. The update carries the version number 24.81.5.en-US, bringing over Android M version 6.0.1.

The Droid Turbo was released back in 2014 as a Verizon exclusive. At the time, the Droid Turbo beat out the second-generation Moto X, though it was regarded as merely a dead ringer for Moto X that fixed the issues found on the latter device.

How To Download The Marshmallow Update

Verizon has yet to announce exactly what changes come with the new software update for Droid Turbo, but the Big Red is expected to publish a changelog shortly on its software page for the smartphone.

For owners of the Droid Turbo, the rollout of the software update is just kicking off, so it might take some time before the notification arrives. But there's always the option to manually check the Droid turbo's settings menu to find out if the update has indeed landed.

For the more impatient Droid Turbo owners who want to go rogue, there's an alternative way to get the Marshmallow update. The Android Soul has provided a download link and an accompanying guide detailing the installation process, but it's probably best to simply wait for the over-the-air update officially.

What's New

Because there's no changelog as of this time, it's hard to predict what the new software update spells for the Droid Turbo, thought it's a safe assumption that Marshmallow-standard features will be present such as Android Pay, a System UI Tuner, Custom Google Tabs and whatnot.

While Marshmallow might come off as a little outdated given that Android 7.0 Nougat is now Google's headline OS version, it's still quite a rarity for older smartphones to receive software updates nowadays.

Droid Turbo Specs

The Motorola Droid Turbo was Motorola's flagship back in 2014 rocking a 5.2-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1,440 x 2,560 with 565 ppi. It came with Android 4.0 KitKat out of the box and was powered by a 2.7 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor and an Adreno 420 chip for graphics.

It was available in either 32 or 64 GB variants with 3 GB of RAM. On the back of the phone is a 21-megapixel shooter that can record 4K video at 24 fps. On the front is a measly 2-megapixel shooter, though it's able to at least record 1080p video.

For owners of the Droid Turbo, have you received the software update yet? How is Marshmallow running so far? Feel free to sound off in the comments section below!

Moto' Cedric' May Become the First Motorola Smartphone To Receive Android 7.0 Nougat As Default : Mobile : Gamenguide

This week, Moto G4 and G4 Plus finally began to receive Android 7.0 Nougat in Brazil, making it part of the select list of devices that receive the current mobile system from Google initially. Lenovo currently continues with the promotion of Moto M, the new intermediary officially announced in November, as well as with the Moto Z family, with the Play variant that arrived in August. Despite continuing to release the update for Nougat on the devices of the brand, Motorola has no phone that brings the latest version of the factory robot in default, however, a new leak this week indicates that this concept may soon change. It is called Motorola Moto' Cedric'.

A document from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the telecommunications regulator in the United States revealed a device that came as a surprise. Nicknamed 'Cedric', the device apparently brings the Android Nougat natively, and can reach the market with a range of variants, with the numbers: XT1670, XT1671, XT1675 and XT1676.

This device however, is still full of mystery when it comes to the complete specs. However, it is expected that the Motorola Moto' Cedric will have run no further with Moto G4 or G4 Plus. There should be the specifications that have been used in its previous generation. It is because there have been some previous Motorola smartphone got Android 7.0 update.

One important thing that users need to know is, the Android Nougat 7.0 will come as default in factory setting. Which means, this device should be able to upgrade to the next Android software (possibly called by Oreo 8.0). Therefore, even though the device is still a concept, the hype of this smartphone is big enough.

Is your old Nokia or Motorola mobile phone worth up to £1,000?

> Comments (0)

If you're in desperate need of a cash boost to get your last Christmas presents then you might want to dig up your old mobile phone as it could be worth a small fortune.

Some old, chunky mobile phones are now seen as "classics" and even, get this, "antiques", which means they are selling for hundreds.

The amount of cash you could be raking in will differ from model to model, but research from talkmobile has found that 56.8 per cent of people have an old phone lying around.

According to the experts, you might find a phone worth a small fortune, as some retro handsets are now classed as modern antiques with collectors willing to pay handsomely for them.

Ben Wood, mobile phone expert of CCS Insight, who has a collection of nearly 1000 mobile phones from the past 30 years, said: "We all remember our first mobile phones, whether it was the iconic brick-sized Motorola DynaTAC used by Gordon Gekko in Wall Street, a Samsung that flipped open, or the noughties manufacturer of choice, Nokia.

"It's now over 30 years since the first mobile phone became commercially available and a whole generation of people have owned a host of different handsets over the years.

"Finding an old handset in the back of a drawer can be an evocative experience: people tend to remember the phone they had during significant periods in their lives, such as a certain job or a particularly memorable holiday.

"It's interesting that a piece of technology can induce sentimental feelings in many people."

A study showed our most affectionate memories are for the humble Nokia 3310 and 3390 models. The most popular phone of the late 1990s and early 2000s featured pioneering elements such as an inbuilt aerial, exchangeable cases, text messaging, and the addictive game Snake.

"It's no surprise people are nostalgic about their Nokias," said Ben.

"The brand was a real game changer back in the nineties and Nokia worked extremely hard to make the mobile phone accessible to everyone.

"Nokia phones were affordable, robust and reliable, and unlike most smartphones of today, sometimes only needed charging once a week.

"Thanks to Nokia the mobile phone became the most prolific consumer electronics device on the planet."

Motorola Solutions acquires Cyfas Systems assets geared for European emergency call centers

Motorola Solutions today announced its purchase of the Mobile Assets Communications Systems (MACS) and related Integrated Communications Control System (ICCS) products from United Kingdom-based holding company Cyfas Systems that are expected to help European emergency-call centers transition to next-generation platforms.

Existing Motorola Solutions products provide the same call-handling, radio-console and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) functionality as the MACS and ICCS, but they do not work with European and East African emergency call centers, according to Tom Guthrie, Motorola Solutions’ vice president of smart public-safety solutions.

“It’s the same types of functions, but it’s not exactly assembled in the same way as you do it in the U.S.â€"it’s the combination that fits in the European market, based on the way that they divide up their command-and-control operations,” Guthrie said during an interview with IWCE’s Urgent Communications. “We already have the capabilities in North America; we just didn’t have them in the system combination that [Europe and East Africa] normally buys.”

With the MACS, Motorola Solutions expects to be positioned to help Great Britain’s emergency call centers have a multi-technology platform that lets them operate on both the existing TETRA system and the LTE-based Emergency Services Network that is being deployed, according to a Motorola Solutions press release about the acquisition.

MACS leverages cloud-based technologies that are accessed via reliable private-network connectivity, which improves agility and removes the need to maintain on-site IT infrastructure, according to the press release. If a network outage prevents the call center from accessing the cloud, minimum core functionality can be retained at the premise, Guthrie said.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Employees that operate and develop the MACS technology will be relocated to a still-to-be-determined Airwave office location that will be within “drivable” distance for the employees, according to Guthrie. No job cuts are expected as a result of the acquisition, he said.

“Noâ€"in fact, we’re going to be growing this quite a bit,” Guthrie said.

Would a Trump administration allow Google to sell Motorola to Lenovo?

American Flag What's Next Question

I don't want to start an argument about politics. My sentiment this lovely day derives from what the incoming White House is, not what so many people here in California want it to be. I wonder: If Google bought Motorola during a Trump presidency, rather than Obama regime, would later sale to Lenovo be allowed or closing of the Texas phone-assembly factory about 18 months after opening?

The question arises from a pique of sadness as I look at the FedEx tracking information for two Motorola phones purchased directly from Lenovo. City of origin: Wuhan, China. My last Moto came from the Lone Star State, here in the USA. I pine for what might have been, remembering my excitement about Google's $12.5 billion Motorola Mobility acquisition, in August 2011. My opinion expressed then remains: "The acquisition is bold for its risks, which are no less great than the benefits". I was no fan of the later sale to Lenovo.

Motorola is, or was, an iconic innovatorâ€"and one of the great American tech success stories; inventor of the cell phone. The Google-Moto merger brought together two industrialists, with Android between them, that shared deep heritage of inventive ingenuity. The best software development takes place in tandem with hardware engineeringâ€"a lesson that Apple, like IBM decades earlier, teaches. Googorola was a potentially great union that divorced too soon.

A scant 3 years later, Google surrendered Moto's assets and brand to Lenovo, which moved assembly to home turf China. If this all occurred in 2017 rather than 2014, wouldn't the Trump administration seek to keep an American icon from foreign ownership? Think about this question in context of his campaign platform, or the choices he makes for senior posts in his administration. Nationalism and protecting America's security are recurring themes.

Is it my imagination, or are Motorola radios used by cops across the United States? Wouldn't that fact alone cause the new White House to make national security major reason for blocking sale to a Chinese company? Think of that in context of Trump statements about China, losing American jobs there, and trade imbalances.

I remember in the 1990s when U.S. restrictions on supercomputer exports caused grief for companies like Dell or Silicon Graphics selling PC workstations. More than 15 years after the first meaningful easing of limitations, the average smartphone user carries in his or her pocket more than the equivalent of workstations once designated as supercomputers. No one restricts cell phone exports, although last year the United States did impose restrictions on some Intel chip exports to China.

As Jan. 21, 2017 approaches, and the first full day of the Donald Trump administration, tech companies should consider how their global business relationships will change. The President-elect pledges to reduce regulations; but in the interest of keeping jobs stateside, balancing trade, and protecting national security, his administration likely will interfere with U.S. business operations here and abroad, too.

Motorola's sale to Lenovo is a good rhetorical metaphor for what lies ahead.

Of course there's nothing to block, but as I look at the two Moto phones that arrived yesterday, with Lenovo branding, I wonder what Google could have done had its executives given the investment more time to mature or whether a protectionist White House might have demanded that commitment.

The two phones are for my brothers-in-law, BTW. The Moto G Play will replace a 1st-generation Moto G, while the other phone will replace an iPhone 4s.

The stock has performed well over the last couple of weeks, and I think the momentum will carry into 2017. I own these shares and recommend them at current prices.

The dividend increase has helped to lift the yield on these shares to a very competitive 2.3%. Capital-gains appeal is ample as well.

The stock trades at 15 times 2017 earnings estimate of $5.15 per share. That’s a reasonable valuation for a company with Motorola Solutions’ growth rates.

I like the company’s position in a market that will likely see increased spending. The stock could pull back into the $70s in the near term, but any pullbacks would represent a buying opportunity.
